Government Launches Dedicated '160' Helpline to Combat Digital Payment Frauds
In a major push to enhance digital security, the Government of India today launched a dedicated '160' helpline to help citizens report online financial frauds in real-time. The initiative, a collaboration between the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), aims to provide immediate assistance to victims of digital payment scams.
Key Features of the '160' Helpline:
24/7 Toll-Free Service: Citizens can report UPI frauds, phishing attacks, fake loan apps, and other cyber-financial crime
Instant Transaction Blocking: Enables quick freezing of fraudulent transactions when reported promptly
Multi-Agency Coordination: Directly links complaints to banks, payment processors and cybercrime authorities
Pan-India Coverage: Will be available in multiple regional languages within three months
Urgent Need for Intervention
Recent RBI data shows digital payment frauds surged by 217% in 2024, with losses exceeding ₹2,500 crore. The new system cuts response time from days to minutes - critical since 87% of stolen funds are withdrawn within 90 minutes of the fraud.
How It Works:
Victim calls 160 immediately after detecting fraud
Verifies identity using OTP-based authentication
Receives real-time guidance while system alerts bank and cyber police
Union IT Minister Amit Shah emphasized: *"This is a war against digital criminals. The 160 helpline, combined with our new AI-powered fraud detection systems, will significantly strengthen India's digital payment ecosystem."
